MMO 3.4 won't work with the Triton

.img files only work for the Magellan Meridian series, .imi work for both the eXplorist and Triton series, but need to be run through MMOconverter.

MMO v.2.7 should only export an .imi file, whereas MMO v.1.0 should only export an .img.

How are you saving your map? Once a region is created, the only way I know of saving the map is under the File tab - Upload to GPS - Background map... then check the option to "Store on Hard Drive." This generates the .imi map file, which then needs to be run through MMOconverter before it can be used with the Triton (MMOconverter will not change the name or extention of the file you're converting - it simply tweaks the code to make it work).

Are you working off the "Making your own topographic maps" guide found in the tutorials section of this forum?

Also, as far as I'm aware, there is no .img to .imi converter.

You're using MMO v2.7? Did you create a map region (using Create Region tool, then right clicking) before you tried to "upload to GPS." If so, did you select "Store on hard drive?"
I've been creating .imi files with MMO and DON'T have MapSend installed
I don't think you can directly convert an .img to an .imi file. If you have the same raw data you used in MMO v1.0 to create the .img file, you can use it when creating an .imi file in MMO v2.7. (this, of course, assumes you have the raw GIS data, and created the original Garmin .img file in MMO 1.0).
